Research into Institutions

20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox have become one of the most well known film institutions of all time, and cover a broad range of film genres. Famous thrillers include Die Hard, Taken and Gone Girl.

Their ident, seen to the right, features a low angle shot of the 20th Century Fox logo. There are lights around the logo, which are pointing towards the sky. There is a general theme of grandeur in the ident, making the institution seem awe-inspiring. The night sky also plays a role in this, showing the sheer size of it.

Lionsgate

Lionsgate Entertainment

Lionsgate is a relatively new film institution, founded in 1997, however it has already produced several famous thrillers, including The Hurt Locker, The Hunger Games and American Psycho.

One thing to notice about their ident is that the sky also plays a key role in presenting the institution as important. The name 'LIONSGATE' is superimposed over the clouds in black whilst the clouds are white, making it stand out. This ident gives the audience an almost heavenly feel, again showing the grandeur of the institution.

Universal Pictures

One of the oldest film institutions and part of Hollywood's 'Big Six', Universal Studios have produced some of the most well known films of all time. Examples of thrillers include the Bourne and Fast and Furious franchises, as well as classics such as Jaws and Jurassic Park.

The ident shows the institution name seemingly orbiting the Earth, showing the importance and power of the institution to the audience. There are stars in the background, which like the first two idents gives a heavenly feeling.

Universal

Warner Bros. Studios

Another hugely famous institution, Warner Bros. Studios have produced 100's of films covering many genres since 1927. Famous thrillers include InceptionThe Shining and the Batman films.

This ident is similar to some of the others as it is set in the clouds which are associated with the heavens. However this may not be the effect we want with our type of thriller as psychological thrillers generally aren't associated with the heavens but with something more sinister.

Paramount

Paramount

One of the oldest film institutions, founded in 1912, Paramount are associated with films from all over the thriller genre, such as Psycho, Mission Impossible and Saving Private Ryan.

Paramount's ident remains fairly similar to the idents of the other major institutions set in the clouds. It also has a single mountain dominating the ident, which suggests that the film will have the same effect.

Spyglass Entertainment

Another new film institution, Spyglass Entertainment is a much smaller film institution than the others, generally co-producing with other institutions rather than making independent films.

Their ident is far more basic than the others, and is also one of the only ones not to use clouds. Instead, it shows a silhouette of a man looking through a 'Spyglass' as mentioned in the title, suggesting a new outlook on filming. This ident shows that simplicity can also work effectively.
