Ideas for Title Sequence
Title Sequence
Our editing showed us that we had around 30 seconds that we could use for the titles, which was plenty of time. We had already decided on the title 'White Walls', so it made sense that we incorporated actual white walls into our titles. The Storyboard for this can be seen under the 'Storyboard' tab under 'Planning'.
As a group we also had the idea to incorporate a number of themes into the title sequence, to set the right mood for the film. We decided upon:
- Claustrophobia
- Medical Equipment
- Urban Decay
- Disorientation
The title sequence uses handheld shots throughout, with an edgy soundtrack. It begins with a shot of some glass medical bottles through a dirty window. The name of the first person in our group will be on the bottom right hand corner of the shot in white. The next shot is of some rusty metal grating, with the next person's name in the corner. The third shot is of some medical equipment in the grass and mud, with the third person's name in the corner. The final shot in the title sequence is another handheld shot of a barbed wire fence, with the final member's name in the corner. The title sequence finishes with a plain white background with black text saying 'WHITE WALLS'.
Claustrophobia:
There are two main ways in which we make the audience feel claustrophobic. The first way is with the use of close up and extreme close up camera shots. This means the audience can't see the full picture, making them feel closed in and on edge. The other way we do this is with the Mise-en-Scène, with the use of the metal grating and the barbed wire, which make the audience feel as though they are trapped, and that they can't escape.
Medical Equipment:
This was more difficult to show in the film as it was more difficult for us to get hold of spare medical equipment, however we did get to use a spare syringe and some chemical bottles, which achieved the right effect. The use of medical equipment establishes the genre of the film to the audience.
Urban Decay:
All of the shots in the title sequence portray some level of urban decay, however shots of the rusty metal grating and the barbed wire do so best. They are synonymous with the dark outlook of the film as they show that something has gone wrong in the film, making the audience feel fearful.
Disorientation:
All of the shots make the audience feel disorientated, as they use handheld camerawork, meaning that the audience never get a clear still view of what is being shown. This makes the audience feel edgy as they are uncertain on what will happen.
Below are some still shots from our title sequence which we filmed.
